Kuwait- Norway FM cautiously optimistic over Mideast Peace Process

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Jan 31 (KUNA) -- The members of the international donor group for Palestine reiterated Wednesday their support for a resumption of peace process between the Israelis and the Palestinians, said Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Soreide.

"Leaving this meeting I am cautiously optimistic but I underline cautiously because we know that there are a lot of things that need to be done to push this process forward," she told reporters after chairing an extraordinary meeting of the international donor group for Palestine, the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee, in Brussels today.

The meeting was hosted by EU High Representative Federica Mogherini. Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah led the Palestinian delegation, which included Foreign Minister Riad Malk.

"All stake holders and parties gave very good interventions. There are several important messages from the meeting today," said Soreide.

Norway expects that the US will put forward a proposal that can lead to the resumption of negotiations between the parties on all outstanding issues, including borders, security, settlements, the status of Jerusalem, refugees, and water, she said.

The donors also expressed deep concern about the financial situation of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

"The participants expressed grave concerns about the humanitarian and economic crisis in Gaza. The international community has made it clear that the Palestinian parties must overcome their internal divisions and that the Palestinian Authority must regain control over Gaza," she noted.

The State of Kuwait was represented at the meeting by Jasem Al Budaiwi ambassador to the EU, NATO Belgium and Luxembourg.

In his speech he called for "a just, comprehensive and definitive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, based on the two-state solution and relevant UNSC resolutions and international references and Arab Peace Initiative." Foreign ministers and senior politicians from a number of donor countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Turkey, Tunisia, UAE took part, as did US Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt.

In recent years, the donor group has held two ordinary meetings a year. The next ordinary meeting of the AHLC is planned to be held in Brussels on 20 March. (end) nk.sd
