(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health.
People are generally considered obese when their body mass index (BMI), a measurement obtained by dividing a person's weight by the square of the person's height, is over 30kg/m2, with the range 25–30kg/m2 defined as overweight.
Awareness about obesity is increasing in Oman when compared to previous years; still, a lot of initiatives should be taken to prevent obesity, especially in the age group 10 to 25 years.
Obesity is mostly preventable through a combination of social changes and personal choices. Treatment modalities are supervised diet programme with exercise, medical management and non-surgical and surgical procedures.
Diet programmes may produce weight loss over the short term, but maintaining this weight loss is frequently difficult and often requires making exercise and a lower calorie diet a permanent part of a person's lifestyle. Diet quality can be improved by reducing the consumption of energy-dense foods, such as those high in fat and sugars, and by increasing the intake of dietary fibre. A good diet which includes fresh fruits, vegetables with lots of water and keeping away high fat and sugar-rich foods, juices and soft drinks is the key to healthy weight management.
All types of low-carbohydrate and low-fat, high protein diets appear equally beneficial. The calorie required depends on individual BMI. Weight loss is possible with diet and exercise alone, but one should take care at an initial stage rather than reaching a BMI of 40 or above. With daily exercise and a structured diet plan, one can reduce their weight slowly and steadily and it can be maintained as well.
Slow weight loss is always advised rather than rapid weight loss in a short term which can lead to health impacts. Weight loss through reduced calorie intake and exercise over a period of time has many beneficial effects on the individual when compared with people with obesity. Various studies have proved that the adverse impact with weight loss is very less compared to impacts with obesity.
Individuals affected by severe obesity are resistant to long-term weight-loss by diet and exercise; for them, surgery becomes an option.
If diet, exercise and medication are not effective, patients can choose non-surgical or surgical options. Non-surgical interventional procedures are gastric ballooning, which is reversible and repeatable but the patient can gain weight if he does not adhere to the diet modifications. Surgical interventions are of two types gastric bypass and gastric sleeve.
