Carsten Höller's Four Spiral Slides Permanently Installed In Mexico City Mall
The installation was commissioned by Arte Abierto and Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos. It is visible from Antara's gardens, plazas, and pedestrian promenade. The four slides vary significantly in size, ranging from 39 to 125 feet in height and 102 to 295 feet in length.
These permanent slides are accessible to the public, allowing up to four individuals to ride simultaneously from various entry points, including family-style restaurants, Google offices, the Rosewood Hotel, and the Arte Abierto Art Space. All four slides converge at a single exit.
Höller described his intention for the installation to act as an“equalizer” and to evoke a“voluptuous panic upon an otherwise lucid mind” in those who experience it. In 2015, he told The Guardian that it is“impossible to travel down a slide without smiling.” This installation is part of an ongoing series of works that Höller began in 1998, with previous iterations appearing globally, including Test Site (2006) at Tate Modern in London, Victoria Slide (2011) at the New Museum in New York, Vitra Slide Tower (2014) at the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Florence Experiment Slides (2018) at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, and DAC Slide (2020) at the Danish Architecture Centre in Copenhagen.
