Carsten Höller Transforms Beijing's UCCA Into A 'Laboratory Of Doubt'
Höller, who previously trained as an agricultural scientist and holds a doctorate in insect scent communication before transitioning to art in the early 1990s, describes the exhibition as a“Laboratory of Doubt.” Visitors enter through one of two randomly assigned entrances, experiencing versions of the exhibition in either color or black and white. While most works are the same, the conditions under which they are viewed differ, encouraging visitors to compare their experiences with others.
A key work in the exhibition is Pill Clock, which features a heap of pills on the floor. A mechanism drops a new pill onto the pile every three seconds, a duration the artist identifies as“the present.” According to press materials, the pills contain an“undisclosed substance” that“can be swallowed.” Höller is known for experimenting on humans with his art.
Other installations include Tilted Carousel (Five Colours) ( 2026 ) and its monochrome counterpart Tilted Carousel (Two Whites), which rotate in opposite directions at a slow pace. Another piece, Sluice ( 2026 ), created with Valia Fetisov, involves glass sliding doors that lock, requiring visitors to stand completely still for 30 seconds for the exit to open.
