Türkiye Expands Innovation Network as Active Research Centers Surpass Major Milestone

Date:

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s innovation ecosystem continues to expand with government support, as the country recorded 1,365 active research and development (R&D) centers and 348 design centers by the end of September, according to data from the Industry and Technology Ministry.

The figures highlight the growing role of research, technological development and industrial design in Türkiye’s economic strategy, with specialized facilities operating across numerous industries and employing thousands of highly educated professionals.

The country’s R&D centers employ nearly 94,000 people nationwide, including approximately 57,700 university graduates, more than 18,500 employees holding master’s degrees and over 2,100 individuals with doctoral qualifications or higher.

This skilled workforce has contributed to the completion of more than 80,400 research and development projects, while nearly 16,000 additional projects remain underway. The continued expansion of research activities reflects the range of initiatives being pursued to strengthen Türkiye’s technological capabilities and encourage innovation across its economy.

The centers have also generated close to 49,000 patents. More than 17,500 have been registered, while approximately 31,300 applications are still awaiting examination results, demonstrating the scale of intellectual property development taking place within the country’s research network.

Türkiye’s R&D infrastructure covers a broad range of industries, including energy, agriculture, healthcare, transportation, logistics and aviation. This diversity allows research activities to support both established manufacturing industries and sectors developing new technologies.

Machinery Manufacturing Leads R&D Activity

Machinery and equipment manufacturing accounts for the largest share of Türkiye’s R&D centers, with 160 facilities operating in the sector. The automotive supply industry follows with 136 centers, while software ranks third with 128.

Computer and communications technologies also represent a significant part of the research network, with 86 centers. The chemical industry has 82 facilities, while textiles and electrical industries each account for 77 centers.

Food production and the defense industry, excluding weapons and ammunition manufacturing, have 65 R&D centers apiece. The general manufacturing industry follows with 43 facilities.

The distribution of centers across these sectors demonstrates how research and development activities are integrated into Türkiye’s industrial base, particularly in manufacturing, automotive production, software and communications technology.

The range of participating industries also highlights the importance of technical research beyond traditional manufacturing, with innovation supporting areas that include digital technologies, industrial processes and specialized production.

Istanbul Maintains Its Position As Leading R&D Hub

R&D centers are distributed across Türkiye, although several major industrial and commercial cities account for a substantial share of the network.

Istanbul leads the country with 428 centers, followed by Ankara with 168 and Kocaeli with 137. Bursa hosts 134 facilities, while Izmir has 105.

Other locations include Tekirdag with 54 centers, Manisa with 34, Konya with 26, Sakarya with 25 and Antalya with 21.

The concentration of facilities in these cities reflects their importance to Türkiye’s industrial, commercial and technological activities. At the same time, the presence of centers across multiple regions indicates that the country’s research infrastructure extends beyond its largest urban areas.

Design Centers Support Industrial And Creative Sectors

Alongside its R&D network, Türkiye has established 348 design centers employing a total of 8,481 people. The workforce includes 5,540 employees with bachelor’s degrees, 820 with master’s degrees and 50 with doctoral qualifications or higher.

These facilities operate across a wide range of industries, with a particularly strong presence in manufacturing, textiles, engineering and architecture. Their activities contribute to product development, industrial design and the creation of solutions tailored to different business sectors.

The textile industry leads the design-center network with 54 facilities. Engineering and architecture rank second with 51, followed by general manufacturing with 45 and machinery and equipment manufacturing with 43.

The automotive supply industry has 23 design centers, while media and communications account for 17. Furniture has 15 centers, construction and automotive manufacturing have 12 each, and the defense sector has eight.

The figures show that design capabilities are concentrated in industries where product appearance, functionality, engineering and production requirements play an important role in competitiveness.

Istanbul Also Leads The Design Network

Istanbul has the largest concentration of design centers, with 154 facilities, according to ministry data. Ankara follows with 39, while Bursa hosts 31 and Izmir has 28.

Kocaeli and Tekirdag each have 15 design centers, further demonstrating the importance of Türkiye’s major industrial regions to the development of design expertise.

The expansion of both R&D and design facilities reflects Türkiye’s broader efforts to strengthen its innovation ecosystem through public support, skilled employment and investment in technical capabilities. With thousands of projects underway and a substantial number of patent applications awaiting review, the country’s research network continues to contribute to technological development across a wide range of economic sectors.
