Türkiye’s 1,365 R&D Hubs Generate Nearly 49,000 Patents
(MENAFN) Türkiye’s state-backed innovation base has expanded sharply, with 1,365 active research and development (R&D) centers and 348 design centers operating as of the end of September, according to Turkish Industry and Technology Ministry data.
The R&D hubs employ almost 94,000 people nationwide. Roughly 57,700 of them hold bachelor’s degrees, more than 18,500 have master’s degrees and over 2,100 hold a doctorate or higher.
That workforce has finished more than 80,400 projects to date, while nearly 16,000 remain in progress. The centers have produced almost 49,000 patents so far. Over 17,500 have been registered, and about 31,300 are awaiting examination results.
The network cuts across the economy, covering energy, agriculture, healthcare, transportation, logistics and aviation. Machinery and equipment manufacturing leads with 160 centers, ahead of the auto supply industry with 136 and software with 128.
Next in line are computer and communications technologies with 86 centers and chemicals with 82. Textiles and electrical sectors each have 77 facilities, food and the defense industry (excluding weapons and ammunition) have 65 apiece, and general manufacturing has 43.
Geographically, Istanbul dominates with 428 R&D centers. Ankara follows with 168, Kocaeli with 137, Bursa with 134 and Izmir with 105. Tekirdag has 54, Manisa 34, Konya 26, Sakarya 25 and Antalya 21.
The 348 design centers employ 8,481 people, including 5,540 bachelor’s degree holders, 820 with master’s degrees and 50 with doctorates or higher.
Design activity is concentrated in industrial and structural fields. Textiles top the list with 54 centers, followed by engineering and architecture with 51, general manufacturing with 45 and machinery and equipment manufacturing with 43.
The auto supply industry has 23 design centers, media and communications 17, furniture 15, and construction and auto manufacturing 12 each. The defense sector has eight.
Istanbul hosts the most design centers at 154, ahead of the capital Ankara with 39, Bursa with 31 and Izmir with 28. Kocaeli and Tekirdag have 15 each, the ministry data showed.
