Erdogan Hails Libyan Parliament’s Endorsement of Türkiye Maritime Deal
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has welcomed the eastern-based Libyan House of Representatives’ unanimous endorsement of a maritime jurisdiction agreement between Türkiye and Libya, describing the development as encouraging.
“Yesterday, we received extremely pleasing news from Libya,” Erdogan said during a meeting with members of his Justice and Development (AK) Party in Ankara.
“The Libyan House of Representatives unanimously approved the Memorandum of Understanding on the Delimitation of Maritime Jurisdiction Areas signed between Türkiye and Libya. I hope this important decision will be beneficial and auspicious,” he said.
Erdogan also extended his greetings to the members of the Libyan parliament following the vote.
The approval took place on Tuesday, when lawmakers in eastern Libya backed the memorandum originally signed in 2019 between Türkiye and Libya’s then-Government of National Accord. The agreement establishes the maritime jurisdiction boundaries of both countries in the Mediterranean Sea.
Alongside endorsing the deal, the eastern-based legislature overturned a resolution adopted in 2020 that had opposed ratifying agreements concluded with Türkiye, marking a reversal of its earlier position on the maritime arrangement.
Türkiye and Libya signed the memorandum in November 2019 to define the limits of their respective maritime jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean.
