Canada, Türkiye Begin New Strategic Partnership
(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Türkiye is expected to open a new chapter in relations between the two countries, with the trip representing "the beginning of a new strategic relationship," Canada’s ambassador to Ankara, Marcel Lebleu, said Tuesday.
Speaking ahead of Carney’s visit to Türkiye from Oct. 21 to 23, Lebleu described the trip as the starting point for closer bilateral cooperation rather than a final achievement.
"It really marks the launching of a new relationship. The visit in itself is not an end in itself. I would say it's actually the beginning of this strategic relationship," he said, according to reports.
The ambassador noted that both Carney and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan support this approach, having already held two meetings with each other.
Lebleu, who assumed his diplomatic post in Ankara in September, also expressed condolences over a deadly fire at the Wainwright military base in Alberta over the weekend. The incident claimed the lives of four service members and injured several others, prompting the Canadian flag at his residence to be lowered to half-staff.
He described Carney’s trip as a historic diplomatic milestone, marking the first official visit to Türkiye by a Canadian prime minister. He also pointed out that no Turkish president has previously undertaken a state visit to Canada.
Reflecting on his initial meeting with Erdogan during the presentation of his diplomatic credentials, Lebleu said the discussions were constructive and highlighted the need to deepen relations between Ankara and Ottawa.
"Türkiye is a country where we need to invest more. I'm not talking about economic investment, but investing more in our relation. We see a country in which we can create a strategic partnership," he added.
