Hélia Paukner Named Artistic Director Of Biennale De Lyon
Paukner joins the French organization from Marseille's Mucem, the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations, where she has served as curator and head of contemporary art since 2019. During her time at the national museum of cultural anthropology, she curated exhibitions including solo shows for French artist and filmmaker Clément Cogitore (scheduled for 2025–26 ) and Turner Prize–winning multimedia artist Laure Prouvost (scheduled for 2025 ). She also organized the largest French retrospective to date for Egyptian-born artist Ghada Amer in 2022.
This appointment marks Paukner's return to Lyon, as she previously worked a decade ago as a research assistant to the director at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. Prior to her move to Mucem, she participated in selection panels for art schools and artist residencies. From 2020 to 2025, she assisted the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azure Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs in allocating grants to artists.
In her dual new capacities, Paukner will be responsible for selecting each Biennale's curator. She will also oversee the Lyon Dance Biennale, which takes place in alternate years to the art event. The Lyon Dance Biennale was established in 1984, while the Biennale de Lyon was founded in 1991. The eighteenth edition of the art Biennale, curated by Catherine Nichols, is currently on view through December 13.
We previously reported:The Bangkok Art Biennale has revealed 72 artists and collectives for its 2026 edition, running October 29, 2026, through February 28, 2027.
