Türkiye Mourns Victims of Deadly Explosion at Canadian Military Base
(MENAFN) Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry expressed sorrow on Sunday over the deaths and injuries caused by an explosion and fire at a Canadian military installation.
“We extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to the people of Canada and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” the ministry said in a statement.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that four people had died and "dozens more” had suffered serious injuries after an explosion triggered a “violent fire” that spread rapidly through a military base in Alberta. He described the incident as "one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime."
“I regret that I can confirm at this time that Forest Service members have lost their lives and their next of kin has been notified. Dozens more are seriously wounded,” Carney told reporters.
The explosion and subsequent fire broke out Saturday afternoon at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles) southeast of Edmonton. Strong winds hampered firefighting operations as the flames spread beyond a designated training area.
Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed that the incident had caused casualties but did not disclose the number of victims, describing the situation as “active and delicate.”
