Felipe Ehrenberg Exhibition Debuts At London's Paraíso Fair
Titled“Felipe Ehrenberg: 26 Maculate Letters from Mexico | An Unfinished Conversation,” the display at the Somers Gallery stand showcases digitally collaged letters, cards, and envelopes, along with archival documents, photography, and an updated artist book. The exhibition was initially planned for 2016 but was canceled due to Ehrenberg's declining health. He passed away the following year. The works were curated by Fortunata Calabrò, a researcher and friend of the artist, who was also their original addressee. Ehrenberg developed his mail art practice during his exile in England in the late 1960s and early 1970s, inspired by the UK postal service. The exhibition is unified by a quote from the artist:“Who sends a letter is always waiting for an answer.”
Paraíso, which means“paradise” in Spanish, was founded by Javier Calderón, who also established the Somers Gallery, a London-based institution focusing on Latin American art. This marks the first Latin American art fair in the UK capital since Pinta ceased its London edition in 2015. The inaugural fair, hosted at Ambika P3, a former concrete construction hall, features 22 exhibitors with a special emphasis on Mexican art.
Fair partner and art consultant Manuela Rodríguez noted the community-led approach to bringing galleries on board. Galleries participating hail from countries including Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, and Bolivia, alongside UK galleries with a regional focus, such as Astéri Contemporary, which specializes in UK and Brazilian artists. Rodríguez is also exhibiting, presenting six Latino artists from the Royal College of Art through her Bogotá-based consultancy, LAACC, co-founded with Laura Montañés. Works at the LAACC stand start at just £300, with many pieces across the fair, including Ehrenberg's mail art, carrying four-figure price tags. Mexico City gallery Acapulco 62 is offering a monumental wooden carving by Germán Venegas for £64,000.
The VIP preview on Thursday attracted a diverse and enthusiastic audience, with galleries reporting offers within the first hour. Many attendees were from outside London's established Latino art scene. Paraíso runs at Ambika P3, 35 Marylebone Rd, London, until October 18.
