Headline: BreakingTürkiye Bans Social Media for Children Under 15

Date:

(MENAFN) Türkiye has banned social networks from serving anyone under 15, under new rules issued by the Cyber Security Directorate and published Saturday in the Official Gazette.

The regulation states that providers "cannot provide services to children who have not reached the age of 15."

For users 15 and older, platforms must offer differentiated services and put necessary safeguards in place. The rules direct providers to weigh each minor's best interests, along with their physical, mental, psychological, social and emotional development.

Age checks must put personal data protection first. The regulations say verification should establish only whether a user meets the age threshold, not who the user is.

Providers must also open up how their systems work. The reliability of verification methods, their algorithm structures and their child-focused service policies must be made "clear, auditable and testable for users, parents and the directorate," the regulations stressed. Platforms are further required to build clear, user-friendly parental control tools.

The rules were issued under new social media legislation that the Turkish parliament passed in April.
