On Monday 21 September, during an attack on the village of Quelimane, in the district of Mocímboa da Praia, in the province of Cabo Delgado, the local health centre supported by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was looted, and essential medicines and medical equipment were stolen.
"Attacks on and looting of health facilities, as well as the theft of medicines and medical equipment, are having devastating consequences for communities already facing extreme vulnerability due to conflict and displacement. People with chronic diseases such as HIV/TB, hypertension or diabetes have their treatment interrupted, putting their lives at risk. Health care must remain accessible to all, including people living in areas affected by conflict or insecurity."
Pooja Iyer, MSF's general coordinator in Mozambique.
MSF condemns any act of violence affecting health services. Patients, caregivers and healthcare staff must be respected at all times.
MSF has been present in Cabo Delgado since 2019, providing impartial medical and humanitarian assistance to people displaced by the conflict, host communities as well as those affected by emergencies related to extreme weather events. Since the launch of its medical activities in Mocímboa da Praia in 2022, MSF has continuously expanded access to essential health care. In this district alone, between January and June 2026, MSF teams carried out more than 57,000 outpatient consultations, treated 12,000 patients with respiratory infections and monitored 132 people diagnosed with HIV.
