Türkiye, Iraq Establish Water Cooperation Funding Mechanism
(MENAFN) Türkiye and Iraq formalized a “mechanism document” on Sunday to support the financing of collaborative initiatives in the water sector, as part of a wider framework agreement between the two nations.
Turkish diplomatic sources reported that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani during his official visit to Baghdad.
Following the discussions, Fidan and Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein signed the “Mechanism Document for the Financing of Projects Under the Framework Agreement on Water Cooperation Between the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the Government of the Republic of Iraq.”
Authorities explained that the mechanism establishes procedures to guarantee the execution of the “Water Cooperation Framework Agreement,” which had been signed during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Baghdad in 2024.
According to the agreement, Turkish firms will undertake projects focused on modernizing infrastructure and constructing facilities to ensure the efficient, effective, and sustainable utilization of Iraq's water resources, with funding arranged through a system linked to Iraqi oil sales.
This collaboration is intended to strengthen Türkiye’s role in enhancing Iraq’s water infrastructure and improving the management efficiency of its water resources.
