Italy's PM hails 'message of hope' in Türkiye from saving of 2-year-old after 122 hours under debris
(MENAFN) The rescue of a 2-year-old after 122 hours trapped beneath debris in Turkey was praised as a "message of hope" by the prime minister of Italy on Saturday.
In the earthquake-affected countries of Turkey and Syria, search and rescue efforts are ongoing. "A 2-year-old child was saved in the province of Hatay after spending 122 hours under the debris," Giorgia Meloni said on Twitter, referring to Turkey's southernmost region, which was severely affected by Monday's twin earthquakes.
In this time of immense struggle, she added, "a message of hope."
According to the most recent official statistics, two powerful earthquakes that rattled southern Turkey on Monday resulted in over 22,300 deaths and over 80,000 injuries.
The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes, centered in the Kahramanmaras province, affected more than 13 million people across 10 provinces, also including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa.
Several nations in the region, as well as Syria and Lebanon, also felt the strong tremors that struck Türkiye in the space of less than 10 hours.
