(MENAFN) The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating multiple incidents in which persons attempted to fly drones outfitted with homemade bombs within the United States, according to the agency's director on Thursday.
During a Senate hearing, FBI Director Christopher Wray stated that people inside the country were trying to outfit drones with homemade improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
"We are investigating, even as we speak, several instances within the US of attempts to weaponize drones with homemade IEDs," Wray stated.
He stressed that the threat posed by widely available drones has soared “in terms of their visibility, the speed with which they can move, the distance with which they can move, and also the loads that they can carry."
"These are extraordinarily sophisticated tools that can carry drugs that can launch weaponry, and we must be able to counter it," Wray also added.
He did not, however, go into depth on the armed drone cases. Wray asked US legislators to give the FBI, the country's top domestic intelligence and security organization, and other law enforcement authorities the authority to deal with security risks posed by private drones.
