(MENAFN) The FBI may have had up to eight informants in the right-wing 'Proud Boys' fraternity ahead of the Capitol Hill incident on January 6, 2021, according to the New York Times on Monday. Five members of the gang are scheduled to stand trial next month for their suspected role in the attack.
Based on the outlet's citation of "heavily redacted" court filings, the defense for those five members argued that some of the information provided by the FBI's sources "was favorable to their efforts to defend their clients against sedition charges" and had been "improperly withheld by prosecutors" until recently.
The New York Times report emerged as several Republicans and conservative pundits claimed the Capitol brawl was part of an FBI false-flag conspiracy against then-President Donald Trump and his supporters.
The NYT said that because the court documents are subject to a "very restricted protective order," it is impossible to determine what information the informants gave with the FBI or how it may benefit the defendants.
