Doha: Merwad Exhibition, which has now become one of the most prominent local and international trade fairs in Qatar that is dedicated to women's fashion and accessories, will soon go regional with plans afoot to promote brands by female entrepreneurs in the GCC to the global arena.

Speaking to The Peninsula on the sidelines of the opening of the 7th edition of 'Merwad' at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) yesterday, Qatar Chamber's Board Member and Chairperson of the Qatari Businesswomen Forum Ibtihaj Al Ahmadani said the Doha-based Arab women's fashion expo will soon be also held in Oman, Saudi Arabia, and other countries in the region.

Al Ahmadani, who inaugurated the expo, was also joined by the Sultanate of Oman's Undersecretary for the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion Aseela bint Salem Al Samsamia and Director of the organising company Vouge Event Company Tamader Al Marri, along with a group of leading businesswomen in touring the expo.

Al Ahmadani said:“Every year, the expo keeps getting even better in terms of the number of exhibitors and the quality of displayed items. This reflects the innovations of Qatari designers and presents a wide range of high-end Arab fashion and luxurious abayas. And there are plans for expansion. We can go to other GCC countries and they can also come here. In the future, we will be seeing Merwad expo in Oman, Saudi Arabia, and many other countries. But the time frame has to be planned together”.

Also speaking to The Peninsula on the sidelines of the event, Al Samsamia said:“I always believed women are very creative, and they come up with outstanding, out of the box ideas. And as a government, either in Qatar or the Sultanate of Oman, our aim is to support and enable them to make things happen, give them the space, open the market for them, and encourage them to do more. So they can be an example for the future generation.

“I'm so proud of what I have seen at the expo today. It is amazing, and I think we can do more. We have discussions in the pipeline, on how to mobilise team work between ladies in Oman and ladies in Qatar, and other GCC countries as well on how they can contribute together, and create an industry where women can shine. It will come like a signature in the global arena as well. It's not only for our region,” Al Samsamia added.

About 200 booths, including more than 150 Qatari businesswomen and many other designers from GCC states, Lebanon, Turkey, Morocco, and India are participating in the six-day expo to present the latest innovations in the field of women's fashion for Ramadan season 2022.

Sponsored by the Qatar Chamber and supported by the Qatari Businesswomen Forum, the expo will run until Monday at the QNCC.

Al Ahmadani went on to reiterate the Chamber's support for exhibitions held by Qatari businesswomen to help them promote their products, whether inside or outside the country, as well as the Qatari Businesswomen Forum's keenness to support Qatari businesswomen and encourage them to maximise their contribution in the country's economic activity.

According to Al Marri, the expo has witnessed significant expansion, from 60 booths in its first edition to 200 this year, highlighting the expo's success in attracting female entrepreneurs and promoting their creativity in the local market.
