Algerians continue demonstrations for leadership change

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS, June 21 (KUNA) -- Waves of Algerians staged demonstrations for the 18th consecutive Friday chanting for ouster of "symbols of the former regime."
Tens of thousands of people packed public squares, stressing on their demand that the ruling system must be changed, along with its "symbols," alluding to decision makers, influential figures and personalities close to the top quarters.
They are also chanting for prosecuting all officials charged with corruption.
Hundreds of thousands of Algerians, after the Friday prayers, flocked to the public square despite stringent measures, such as roads' closure by security forces.
The activists have gathered at the Central Mail Plaza, Odan Square and May First Piazza, brandishing national flags and placards calling for administrative change, resignation of the interim president, his premier, accusing them of being close to the former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
Bouteflika has recently stepped down bowing to popular calls on the veteran leader to quite the office to pave way for reforms in the ruling system.
Security personnel were seen seizing flags carried by Berber protestors, deemed not national, in line with a call by the Deputy Defense Minister and the Army Chief Ahmed Gaid that only "the national flag should be hoisted."
Amazigh tribes have been disgruntled with his statement arguing that they retain the right to manifest their identity.
Algeria has been witnessing, since February 22, widespread protests calling for the ouster of the whole Bouteflika-affiliated leaders.
Authorities have cancelled two presidential elections, one set on April 18 and the other on July 4, amid the ongoing unrest, A number of officials have been placed behind iron bars on corruption charges. (end)
