Amman, June 20 (Petra) - Minister of Transport, Anmar Khasawneh, during his meeting with the Head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Mission Martin Cerisola and the accompanying delegation, reviewed the most important projects the ministry is currently implementing.
Khasawneh said these projects include the implementation of the rapid transit line between the cities of Amman and Zarqa, school transport services, which was launched in partnership with the German agency GIZ and Careem company from the beginning of May until the end of August, the smart applications, road renovation in the city of Jerash, which will be implemented this year on a pilot basis, and restructuring urban transport lines in the main cities (Irbid, Zarqa, Madaba and Salt).
The minister noted the ministry has taken measures to modernize the heavy-load transport fleet, reduce individual ownership, and motivate carriers to switch to transport companies, a plan to be carried out simultaneous with a stimulus package to the services providers.
On feasibility of digitizing the sector, Khasawneh said the ministry, in cooperation with the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LTRC), has undertaken a number of measures to reduce the total cost of transport, through launching an electronic platform to dodge the brokerage fees, which trigger higher transport services.
Regarding the transfer of goods through the border crossings, the minister said the movement of trade exchange with Syria began since the opening of the land crossings (Jaber and Naseeb) on October 5, 2018 but in a limited manner, and on the same context, the Jordanian government has contacted the Syrian side to facilitate the truck, goods movement to and from Syria.
In order to facilitate trade between Jordan and Iraq and increase exports and trade exchange between the two countries, Khasawneh said the ministry agreed with the Iraqi side to allow the entry of loaded trucks to their final destinations in both countries.
Jordan is looking to attract Iraqi trade community to import their goods through its maritime ports, and to market its agricultural and industrial products in Iraq. Jordan has reduced the handling fees at sea ports by 75 percent for goods arriving to Iraqi destinations, he pointed out.
