Greece opposition party leads local elections


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, June 3 (KUNA) -- The New Democracy (ND), the main opposition conservative party in Greece, said its candidates have won the second round of the local elections in 12 out of the country 13 regions on Sunday.
The party made a major victory against the ruling Leftist Syriza party in European Parliament elections last week, securing 9.7 percent lead, which prepared the ground for today's gains, ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.
Greece is on the threshold of a major political change in the five coming weeks before the general elections which chart a new future for the country, he told Athens News Agency.
Admitting defeat of his Syriza party, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras congratulated the winning ND party candidates.
Tsipras called for a snap general elections on July 7 after his party lost the EP elections on Sunday. (end)
