Kuwait to chair UNSC for 3rd time on June 1

NEW YORK,May 31 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait will chair on Saturday, June 1, the UN Secretary Council for the third time in its history during its 2018-19 second non-permanent seat term.
In a statement to KUNA on this occasion, Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the UN headquarters in New York Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi said that it was an honor for his country to preside over the UNSC proceedings, affirming that such occurrence reflected the important stature of Kuwaiti diplomacy.
Kuwait based its foreign policy on balance and moderation, stated the diplomat who affirmed that his country highly respected the US statute and international laws in support of the UNSC mission to maintain peace and security.
"Kuwait's diplomatic achievements in the last few years is due to the grace of Allah Almighty and also came as a result of initiatives carried out by His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah who first laid the foundation of Kuwaiti diplomacy and set its goals since independence," added Al-Otaibi.
In regards to the June meetings, Ambassador Al-Otaibi revealed that the scheduled for the UNSC would be packed with important issues concerning the international community.
He indicated that his country would call for several meetings aimed at enhancing the performance of the UNSC.
Amongst the proposed meetings will be one concerning those lost in areas of armed conflicts, said Al-Otaibi, adding that other meetings will focus on defusing tension and bolstering mediation to prevent war.
In 1979, Kuwait chaired the UNSC for the first time in its history during its first tenure as a non-permanent member in 1978-79. Its second occasion to chair the council was in 2018.
Kuwait's current tenure in the UNSC focused on promoting causes connected with Arab affairs namely the Palestinian cause. The Gulf State also was eager to contribute for efforts to defuse tension and war. (end) asf.gta
