Legacy of US Pres. George H. Bush

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Dec 1 (KUNA) -- George Bush's death was announced in a tweet by his spokesman on Saturday, but no further details were given on the cause of his death.

He was the longest living US president in history.

Bush, who is also the father of the 43rd President of the US, won a single term presidential election that started in January 1989 until 1993.

He won the election with 53 percent of the vote. He carried 40 states and received 426 electoral votes. He was the first sitting vice president elected as president since Martin Van Buren succeeded Andrew Jackson in 1837.

Prior to his presidency, he served as US Vice President from 1981-1989, US Ambassador to the UN and Director of the Central Intelligence, as well as envoy to China and a Congressman.

Once he assumed presidency, Bush found himself at the "helm of the world's only remaining superpower," with the fall of the Berlin Wall fell; the collapse of the Soviet Union; the communist bloc in Eastern Europe broke up and the Cold War ended. He also ordered military operations in Panama.

In August 1990, Bush strongly condemned the Iraqi invasion of Iraq where he immediately put together a 30-nation coalition that was backed by a UN mandate.

Bush addressed a joint session of the US Congress regarding the authorization of air and land attacks, laying out four immediate objectives, saying "Iraq must withdraw from Kuwait completely, immediately, and without condition.

Kuwait's legitimate government must be restored. The security and stability of the (Arabian) Gulf must be assured. And American citizens abroad must be protected." He then outlined a fifth, long-term objective, noting "out of these troubled times, our fifth objective - a new world order - can emerge: a new era - freer from the threat of terror, stronger in the pursuit of justice, and more secure in the quest for peace." On Jan. 17, 1991, US and allied planes struck Iraqi targets and Desert Shield became Desert Storm. The ground war kicked-off in February 24 and Bush ordered a cease-fire 100 hours after the fighting began.

In the wake of that 1991 victory, Bush's approval at home approached 90 percent, where he also gained broad international support for the Gulf War and the war's result were seen "as both a diplomatic and military triumph." In a statement, US President Donald Trump said on the passing of Bush, that "through his essential authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family, and country, President Bush inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service-to be, in his words, "a thousand points of light" illuminating the greatness, hope, and opportunity of America to the world." He added "with sound judgement, common sense, and unflappable leadership, President Bush guided our Nation, and the world, to a peaceful and victorious conclusion of the Cold War." "As President, he set the stage for the decades of prosperity that have followed.

And through all that he accomplished, he remained humble, following the quiet call to service that gave him a clear sense of direction," he affirmed. (Pickup previous) si.mb
