Kuwait FM welcomes UNSC resolution on E. Ghouta truce

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, Feb 24 (KUNA) - Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah welcomed the Resolution 2401, unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council earlier Saturday, to stop hostilities in Eastern Ghouta, Syria, for 30 days.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled thanked the UNSC member states for their positive response to the draft, put forward to the Council by Kuwait and Sweden.
The attitudes of the 15 UNSC member countries to the resolution reflects the unity of the international community in working for putting an end to humanitarian disaster in Eastern Ghouta as per the provisions of the UN Charter, he said in a press release received by KUNA tonight.
The adoption of the resolution crowned hectic lobbying efforts made by the diplomatic missions of Kuwait and sisterly Sweden to the UN over the last fortnight, he said.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled voiced hope that the resolution will pave the way for finding a mutually acceptable political solution to the conflict in Syria based on the outcomes of Geneva process and the relevant UN resolutions.
He attributed the success of the Kuwaiti diplomacy to the instructions of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, voicing joy that this achievement coincides with the Kuwait's national days celebrations. The Council approved the draft with a view to alleviating the suffering of the civilians in Eastern Ghouta and allowing delivery of aid to them after the Syrian regime's attacks killed more than 400 people and injured over 1,000 others there.
