Kuwait- EP approves new entry, exit System for third country nat'ls

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Oct 25 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament approved Wednesday a new draft law on common electronic system to speed up checks at the EU Schengen area's external borders and to register all non-EU travelers.

The new Entry/Exit System (EES) will register information of non-EU nationals, such as name, travel document, fingerprints, facial image, date and place when they enter, exit or are refused entry to the Schengen area, a statement by EP said.

It will apply on both, travelers requiring a visa and to the visa-exempt travelers admitted for a short stay of 90 days, who cross the Schengen area's external borders, the statement added.

The system will replace the manual stamping of passports and speed up border crossings, while making it easier to detect over-stayers and document or identity fraud, it noted.

Data stored in the EES can be consulted to prevent, detect or investigate terrorist offences and other serious criminal offences. Data will be also be available to Europol.

The draft law was approved by 477 votes to 139. EES would be expected to be operational in 2020. (end) nk.mys
