
First BTK freight train departs from Kazakhstan

The first freight train to run along the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway has departed from Kazakhstan, ADY Express, a subsidiary of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, said in a message Oct. 24.
The train, consisting of 82 containers, has departed from Kostanay in Kazakhstan and will arrive in Turkey's Mersin, according to the message.
The opening of the BTK railway will take place Oct. 30 in Baku.
The BTK railway has been constructed on the basis a Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement. The railway's peak capacity will be 17 million tons of cargo per year. At an initial stage, this figure will be one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo.
