Morocco's Rights Watchdog Calls for Adoption of Asylum, Immigration Laws
(MENAFN- Morocco World News) The National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) called, on Wednesday in Geneva, for stepping up the adoption of draft laws on asylum and immigration in accordance with Morocco’s new policy in this field. This call was made by CNDH Secretary General Mohamed Sebbar during a debate at the UNHRC, in the presence of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, Francois Crepeau. Highlighting the global and human approach adopted by the Kingdom in 2013 in the field of migration management, Sebbar also called for building civil society’s capacities, reinforcing foreigners’ integration mechanisms and enhancing coordination among stakeholders. He recalled that the CNDH report on “Foreigners and Human Rights in Morocco”, published in September 2013, had facilitated the preparation of draft laws on immigration, asylum and human trafficking, in consultation with the National Council. Circulars allowing children of citizens from sub-Saharan countries to be schooled were also adopted. The new immigration policy elaborated at the initiative of HM King Mohammed VI helped with the implementation of a special regularization operation for the situation of illegal immigrants starting July 2014, he said. 92 % of the 27,463 cases have been regularized, including 10,201 women, and 577 asylum requests have been accepted.
