Saudi- Counterproductive approach
(MENAFN- Arab News) This is with reference to the report 'France: Russia must halt anti-civilian strikes' (Jan. 12). Russian role in Syria and its unwavering support to Assad's regime is beyond comprehension.
By supporting the Syrian regime which is committing heinous crimes against its own people Russia is only earning the ire of the Arab world. Moscow should revisit its policies in Syria. Assad's departure is imminent. He has survived so far because of Iranian support. Russia does not want the US to gain a foothold in Syria as the American presence is likely to threaten its interests. In this case Russia should strike a deal with the Syrian opposition and the Arab world so as to ensure protection of its interests in the post-Assad era. That is not such a big problem. By continuing to support Assad Russia is basically compounding the problem of terrorism. Assad's presence in Syria is acting as a magnet attracting foreign fighters.
In this scenario Russian actions in Syria will prove counterproductive and harm its regional interests in the years to come. The Arab countries should also speed up their efforts to win Russian confidence and steer Moscow away from Tehran and offering incentives to Russian investors interested in the Gulf and Arab region could do this. In today's world it is all about business. Efforts should be made to increase the trade volume between Russia and the Arab world. I know that it's easier said than done but nothing is impossible in the world of diplomacy and particularly where business and investment is concerned. P. H. Mohammad Jeddah
