WGAD seeks broader resistance of arbitrary detention
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) called on international governments Monday to broaden guidelines and procedures against arbitrary detention and on the rights of anyone deprived of their liberty by arrest or detention.
In its annual report submitted to the 30th session of the Human Rights Council here, the WGAD stressed the importance of reducing lengthy imposed curfews and preventing the detainment of immigrants and refugees.
Moreover, the WGAD called on governments to rectify all cases of arbitrary imprisonment and deprivation of liberty in ways consistent with international standards set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The WGAD annual report revealed that the UN-mandated body had studied 422 cases of enforced disappearances during the year 2014 in 30 countries. In addition, the group called on 48 different governments to address 435 cases of abrupt disappearances.
Formed in 1991, the WGAD is one of several special procedures overseen by the UN Human Rights Council. It tackles cases of arbitrary detention or instances in which governments and states detain or imprison individuals in a manner not allowed by law.
