UAE ready for big data technology, experts say

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Data is the way of the future and will make life easier for everybody if handled properly, experts at The Big Data Show 2015 have stressed.

"Data is the future; data is already a commodity," said Mohammed Abdullah Al Zaffin, IT director of Dubai Municipality. "We firmly believe that data will make life easier for everybody if it is shared and integrated through the proper channels."

Speaking at a session on 'How governments are using big data to make us happier', Al Zaffin noted: "Our goal is to make everybody happy in the city, and we have already established an open data committee to boost efficiency. At the government level we are building platforms that will be available for the public, government and private sector. The future is where you involve everybody."

Isha Aljassmy, IT director of the UAE Ministry of Energy said that the Ministry of Energy is working on several big data initiatives, and that one of the initiatives that has already been accomplished includes smart stations, where the ministry collaborated with all the petrol station companies in the UAE to develop an app that allows users to access data on petrol stations in the UAE on their smartphones. Using the GPS system in the phone, you can locate the nearest petrol station and see the services that they offer. The information on the petrol stations, she explained, is also regularly updated.

"This region is an emerging region, and we see that there is an opportunity that is different from anywhere else," said Pedro Pereira, head of big data, SAP Mena. "Here in the Middle East we see that the government organisations are very forward thinking. They have innovation in their heart, so the traction that we have in the region now to adopt innovation, especially here in Dubai where they are very much committed to the smart city initiatives, is something that you will not find anywhere else. The UAE is ready for big data and this potential is aligned with the visionary leadership of the UAE."

The inaugural Big Data Show is co-located with the Internet of Things Expo (IoTX), which has been conceived to increase the UAE and regional governments and firms' capacity to transform their business models, and leverage monetisation opportunities from the ever-increasing array of smart devices, machines and products in our globally-connected, tech-led societies. Debuting at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), the expo is hosting 42 pioneering technology firms across more than 6,500sqm of exhibition space.

"The Internet of Things is the building block for the next wave of the internet - the Internet of Everything," said Trixie LohMirmand, senior vice president, exhibitions & events management, DWTC. "The Internet of Everything will offer intelligent networked connections resulting in new customer and citizen experiences, improved operational efficiencies, breakthrough innovations and entirely new economic models for services and growth."

According to an 'Internet of Everything Report' published by Cisco - the global IT leader and a lead sponsor of IoTX - a staggering 2.5 billion new people will be online by 2020, while 37 billion new 'things' will be connected by the end of the decade. Contrastingly, multinational software giant, SAP, predicts there will be 75 billion connected devices and 2.5 billion connections by 2020 € unlocking financial opportunities worth $65 trillion in what the German firm calls the 'networked economy'. SAP figures also reveal the Middle East's Internet of Things (IoT) revenue will reach nearly $2 billion in 2015.
