EU welcomes Mali peace deal
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU Friday described signing of a peace agreement in Bamako today by most stakeholders as "a decisive step" and the result of long negotiations supported by the international mediation conducted under the aegis of Algeria.
EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in a statement called on the parties that have not yet signed to do so as soon as possible and to remain engaged through dialogue.
The EU will continue its efforts together with the other members of the international mediation that the conditions of the agreement are fulfilled and implemented, she said.
"All parties must respect the ceasefire and their commitment to working together for the entry into force of this agreement. To this end, the reconciliation efforts must be pursued assiduously to build confidence and national cohesion," said the statement The EU foreign policy chief called for restraint and recalled the commitment of the UN Security Council to punish those who use violence instead of pursuing dialogue.
