Saudi- Ministry notes shortcomings in students' science aptitude
(MENAFN- Arab News) The Ministry of Education is concerned about the poor scientific knowledge displayed by pupils following the results of the annual achievement tests taken by 13898 school children.
The results were shown during the presentation of a study to develop mathematics and natural sciences at public schools in the Kingdom. The project was prepared by the Excellence Research Center of Science and Mathematics Education at King Saud University with the support of the Ministry of Education.
Deputy Education Minister Dr. Hamad Al-Alsheikh coined the education system as the solid base for development especially since we are living in an age of constant technical and scientific competition.
Dr. Al-Alsheikh confirmed that the ministry tries to evaluate its plans goals specifications tools programs and projects to raise the level of performance and effectiveness in students. He pointed out that the most important of these subjects are science and mathematics after the ministry adopted the McGraw Hill education international series translating it and adapting it to the needs of the Kingdom.
According to the official the study confirms the importance of expanding the cooperation scope between universities its research center and public education in addition to reviewing teacher's education plans and programs in universities. One of the main goals of the study is to highlight the importance of science and maths since they are open to international challenges and competition with the Kingdom's children achieving a number of international awards in these fields.
The study discussed the evaluation of the project from various angles such as the suitability of science and math books that have been translated and adapted from the McGraw Hill series for first and second grades.
Books should be suitable to the culture of the community and the teachers' environment the study concluded with a sufficient time frame allocated to these subjects.
To achieve the goals of the study five research teams composed of 116 researchers and participants are currently implementing the project's viability on the ground.
