Egypt- Mubarak sons walk out of prison
(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) The sons of former president Hosni Mubarak were released from prison early on Monday, according to a lawyer and officials.
The lawyer of Mubarak-era's minister of interior Mohamed Al-Gindy told to Daily News Egypt that Gamal and Alaa Mubarak walked free from Cairo security directorate Monday morning.
Egyptian security officials added that Mubarak's sons have been released from Cairo's Tora Prison, nearly four years after they were first arrested along with their father, according to an Associated Press report.
Cairo Criminal Court ordered Thursday the release of Alaa and Gamal, as the embezzlement case is pending re-trial and the defendants had served the maximum pre-trial detention period pending a retrial, state-media reported.
They are accused of aiding their father with appropriating EGP 125m from the money allocated to the presidential palaces.
Former president Hosni Mubarak was found guilty of seizing the money and was sentenced to three years imprisonment in May 2014. His sons were each sentenced to four years in the same case.
The court decision came after the family's lawyer Farid Al-Deeb submitted an appeal against their detention. The Court of Cassation had ordered a retrial for the two brothers earlier this month. According to state-media, the court "cancelled" its earlier verdict.
