Etihad, SAA to expand alliance
(MENAFN) Etihad Airways announced that it is taking steps to strengthen its alliance with South African Airways (SAA) by starting a new daily service to Abu Dhabi from Johannesburg and adding a number of routes to their partnership as well, Gulf Business reported.
The carrier said that these steps also include having the two airlines share services on 49 routes, more than double the previous number which they previously shared, as well as adding an option permitting Etihad to acquire stake in South Africa's flagship airline.
South African Airways, which is struggling to make profit, has previously said that it is seeking a strategic partner as part of its recovery plan which also includes cost reductions and the acquisition of new planes.
"South African Airways and Etihad Airways continue to explore areas for further cooperation, including joint sales and marketing programs," SAA said in a statement.
