Palestinian Minister Dies in Clash with Israeli Troops

(MENAFN- QNA) Palestinian cabinet member Ziad Abu Ein has died after being hit by Israeli troops during a protest in the West Bank and being targeted with large amounts of tear gas.

Abu Ein, who was the head of the Anti-Wall and Settlement Commission, died en route to the hospital as he was rushed by medics from the scene.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the death of Abu Ein, calling it "intolerable barbaric act that could not be ignored." As he announced a three-day of national mourning, Abbas said the Palestinian Authority would take "necessary steps" after an investigation. Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said the death of Abu Ein "will have severe consequences." Abu Ein, 55, was a member of Fatah's Revolutionary Council and was detained previously by Israel and sentenced to life in prison in 1982 before being released three years later in a prisoner swap.
