Public transport system
(MENAFN- Arab News) This is with reference to the report ' Road accidents claim 17 lives' (Sept. 24). There is a great need for checking the rising number of road accidents in the Kingdom. It is not only the responsibility of the authorities as they are doing their level best to control and regulate traffic on the Kingdom's roads and highways. I don't wish to accuse those who lost their lives mentioned in the report. Generally however we tend to ignore traffic rules.
In Jeddah for instance motorists behave properly on streets where Saher cameras are installed. The same people start driving recklessly and jumping red lights where they are sure that nobody is watching them.
This is not a positive attitude. Traffic rules and regulations are for our own safety. By violating those rules we put lives of others at risk as well. No matter how many awareness campaigns the authorities launch until and unless people realize their civic responsibilities the situation will not change. First of all heavy fines should be imposed on reckless driving and secondly mass transit systems should be introduced in the Kingdom.
Without the introduction and promotion of a modern public transport system the number of traffic accidents is not likely to reduce. Bad driving habits have been ingrained into our minds thus making it difficult for the authorities to control the situation.
With the introduction of the mass transit system steps should be taken to ensure that cars are not available easily through banks. Currently purchasing a car on easy installments has become like grocery shopping due to which the number of cars on the Kingdom's roads is increasing beyond the capacity of the available civic infrastructure. Although the government is continuously developing the infrastructure but it is time to think for the future. And mass transit system is the answer to all traffic problems.
