Israel posts 80 percent decrease in plastic bags consumption

(MENAFN) The Israeli Environment Ministry has unveiled an 80 percent decline in plastic bags consumption within the country last year, compared to 2016.

The significant decrease was mostly driven by a 2016 law which imposes restrictions on major supermarkets chains, with the "plastic bag law" aiming to shrink environmental pollution from plastic.

Israel's supermarkets were said to have provided customers with over a billion plastic bags each year with no costs before the year 2016.

Since the legislation was enacted, the supermarkets were forced to charge around USD0.027 per bag.
