First fruits from local date farms hit market

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The first produce from the local date season has started appearing in various retail outlets, drawing a considerable number of customers due to their quality and easy availability.

According to local Arabic daily Arrayah, some Qatari customers told the daily that they preferred local dates due to the utmost care taken by local farmers to grow and nurture palm trees, in addition to being fresh products displayed in the local market.
They said while it is normal for date prices to be a bit high at the start of the season, some sellers want to charge exaggerated rates. Further intervention of the departments concerned is required to curb such practices, they point out.
The prices, the customers inform, could range from QR10-25 a kg for standard varieties and QR35-50 a kg for more premium dates. These rates are likelyto fall as the the season progresses, they add.
Further, the commencement of the third local dates festival at Souq Waqif on July 19 is expected to bring more varieties of dates to the market at reasonable prices, according to the customers. It is also a good opportunity for farms to display their products at one place, where customers can pick and choose at ease.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME)'s agriculture section will organise the festival until August 4, coinciding with the dates production season in the country.
The event will see the participation of a number of local farms and companies.
The festival, sponsored by the Souq Waqif management, is part of the MME's efforts to maintain the cultural heritage of the country and attract more tourists, in addition to encouraging farmers to preserve and develop their palm trees and keep them in the best shape possible.
