Police arrest 11 after raid on gambling den in Sai Ying Pun

Police detained 11 people on illegal gambling charges after a raid in Sai Ying Pun on Hong Kong Island on Saturday. At 2:30am, officers from the organized crime and triad unit, along with members of the criminal intelligence unit from Western Police District, raided a gambling den in an apartment on Queen's Road West, the Oriental Daily reported.

When the officers arrived at the apartment, some people reportedly climbed off a balcony and tried to escape, but were later caught by police.

Ten men and one woman aged between 28 and 52 – five Filipinos, one asylum seeker from India, one mainland Chinese and four locals – were arrested.

Police confiscated three electronic gaming machines , a large number of cards, one card reader, HK$13,000 (US$1,656) in cash and found traces of suspected methamphetamine and some pipes for smoking the drug .

Among those arrested were two men aged 30 and 42 who were allegedly managing the gambling den. The others were charged with illegal gambling. A 28-year-old man was also charged with possession of drugs and tools for taking drugs.

After an initial investigation, police said the gambling den only accepted regular visitors and was operated by triad members.
