UNP appoints committee to probe Vijayakala's statement
The United National Party (UNP) has appointed a committee to investigate the controversial statement made by UNP Parliamentarian and former State Minister of Child Affairs Vijayakala Maheswaran.
The UNP appointed a four member committee to study the statement made by Maheswaran and submit a report.
Ministers Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Thalatha Atukorale, Kabir Hasheem and Ranjith Madumabandara have been included in the committee.
Meanwhile, the Colombo Chief Magistrate today ordered the media to submit unedited recordings of the speech made by the Parliamentarian.
The order was issued following an investigation launched based on a complaint filed by the Sihala Ravaya.
Vijayakala Maheswaran had resigned from her post as State Minister of Child Affairs following the uproar on the pro-LTTE statement she had made.
She handed over her resignation letter to the President and Prime Minister.
Maheswaran had said recently that the LTTE needs to be back in order to ensure incidents like that of the recent murder of a child in Jaffna does not take place.
The statement resulted in both members of the Government and the opposition demanding that she resign. (Colombo Gazette)
