The Chinese Embassy in Colombo has invited select journalists for an urgent meeting tomorrow (Thursday) following the New York Times report which accused China of funding former President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the 2015 Presidential elections.
Sources said that only a few journalists based in Colombo from the local media and Chinese media have been invited for the meeting.
When contacted by Colombo Gazette, officials at the Chinese Embassy in Colombo said that there was limited seating made available for the press meeting at the Embassy and so not all media were invited.
Officials said that the meeting was a "press conference" and a media statement was to be issued later.
All local media and foreign media have been invited in the past for press conferences at the Chinese Embassy in Colombo.
However it is understood that the special press conference being held tomorrow is only for select media to ensure there is no further damage caused to China's reputation in Sri Lanka.
The Times article published on June 26 detailed how Rajapaksa had taken on more than $1 billion in loans from China's Government to build the Hambantota port despite feasibility studies that concluded the project was not economically viable. (Colombo Gazette)
