(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Kyrgyzstan embassy in Doha, in partnership with Al Sulaiti Law Firm, organised a seminar yesterday where Kyrgz expatriates in Doha got a better understanding
of Qatar's labour law.
'It was a very successful event, there were many questions, ideas and comments from my compatriots during the question-and-answer session, Kyrgyzstan ambassador Nuran S Niyazaliev told Gulf Times.
The envoy said the seminar aimed to raise legal awareness and promote greater understanding of the labour law in the country, which regulates the entry, exit and residency of workers in Qatar.
Some of the topics discussed at the event include employees' end-of-service benefits, working hours, overtime pay and leaves (annual, sick and additional leaves).
The law firm's International Section head and senior legal adviser, Mathieu R Faupin, also tackled options to change jobs based on completing or not completing fixed-term and open contracts, and the ‘Exit Permit Grievances Committee', among other provisions of
the law.
The envoy found the seminar interesting and useful to Kyrgyz expatriates who had the opportunity to ask questions and share their views during the discussion yesterday.
'I am sure this event will help my compatriots understand better the Qatari labour law and learn more about their rights and obligations, he said.
According to Niyazaliev, about 500 Kyrgyz expatriates are serving in different sectors of Qatar's economy, making their own contribution to its development and prosperity.
'We hope to continue with this kind of an approach as it helps not only Kyrgyz expatriates in Doha but also the Qatar government as well, he said. 'We want to continue with this practice not only with private law firms but also with the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs.
Niyazaliev thanked His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and the Qatar government for the warm hospitality and suitable working conditions for the Kyrgyz community.
'The recent laws and regulations introduced by the Qatari authorities are serving as a solid step towards improving and protecting the rights of every expatriate worker in Qatar, the envoy said.
Citing Law No 1 of 2015, Law No 21 of 2015 and Law No 13 of 2017, among others, he stressed that many positive changes in legislation have been made, which include abolishing the Kafala system and introducing contract-based system.
Niyazaliev also lauded the establishment of the Wage Protection System, entry and exit regulation, creation of a Labour Dispute Settlement Committee and banning passport confiscation 'regulations that makes it easier for migrant workers to change jobs and leave the country and many others.
'We applaud and welcome these recent changes in the Qatar labour law, he added.
As the introduction of changes in the law is continuing, the envoy pointed out that these regulations need to be explained to the growing number of Kyrgyz expatriates in Doha.
He thanked and lauded Al Sulaiti Law Firm, a leading law firm in Qatar, for accepting their proposal to organise a seminar.
