(MENAFN- Gulf Times) In the run-up to implementation of ATA Carnet in Qatar from August 1, event organisers in Qatar are now more confident on holding or participating in international exhibitions, according to a veteran industry player.
One of the advantages of ATA Carnet is that exhibitors can now do away with raising capital for customs security guarantees, said Adil Ahmed, the project director of the Summer Entertainment City (SEC) — an 11-week indoor, family-oriented festival being held at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre.
'Government rules have been simplified, and that has immensely helped us. Otherwise, there's no way we could get that many exhibitors to come here, Ahmed told Gulf Times.
ATA Carnet is an international customs document that allows the duty-free and tax-free temporary import and export of goods for up to one year. The system is applied to import-export goods that will return to the country of origin within the period which is approved by customs authorities.
The items covered by the ATA Carnet include commercial samples and advertising film, goods for international exhibitions, and professional equipment like press and broadcasting equipment, cinematographic/musical equipment, surgical equipment, educational equipment; and costumes, scenery, and other stage properties.
Private sector leader Qatar Chamber is at the forefront of raising awareness on the advantages of ATA Carnet. This month, the chamber said it will organise a series of introductory seminars and workshops on how to use ATA Carnet.
'Fortunately for us, we own about 98% of the equipment at the Summer Entertainment City. But let's say next year, we want to bring in some specialised equipment, ATA Carnet will make it a lot easier for us. Now, with ATA Carnet they could start processing 10 days ahead of time; the equipment can come in and leave in a single document, Ahmed said.
According to Ahmed, ATA Carnet will help 'open a whole new world of possibilities for exhibitors and event organisers. He also revealed plans to hold an event similar to the SEC in Oman next year.
'We welcome ATA Carnet… we can get some high-end equipment for just a short period, and we would be at ease knowing that we don't have to put up a guarantee to bring that equipment here.
'We are actively considering doing something very similar in Oman, and ATA Carnet will play a big role in this endeavour because when we are transporting QR20mn to QR30mn worth of equipment, we have to be assured that it can come back as well, Ahmed said.w
