Filipino students win mathematics medals in Greece


(MENAFN- Asia Times) Three Filipino high school students won medals at an international mathematics competition held in Rhodes, Greece on June 19 to 24.

Daryll Carlsten Ko from St. Stephen's High School, Sean Eugene Chua from Xavier School, Deanne Gabriella Algenio from Makati Science High School and their team leader Kerish Villegas represented the Philippines at the 22nd Junior Balkan Mathematical olympiad (JBMO), GMA News reported.

Both Ko and Chua won silver medals and Algenio won a bronze. According to the Mathematics Training Guild-Philippines, the participants at the competition were given four and a half hours to answer four problems from topics including algebra, geometry, number theory and combinatorics.

The JBMO hosted participants from Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, France, Republic of Moldova, Kazakhstan, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, and Turkmenistan.

The Philippines was the only Southeast Asian country to participate in this year's competition.
