Oman- Around 5,000 take part in International Day of Yoga

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The grand yoga session organised in Muscat by the Embassy of India on June 21 to celebrate the 4th International Day of Yoga witnessed participation of about 5,000 persons. These included citizens, Indians, other expatriates, diplomatic corps and students.

Held at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, the session began with an address by the Prime Minister of India.

Elderly people aged over 80 years as well as children as young as five years took part in the event, stated a press release.

In organising the event, the embassy was supported by the Government of Oman, represented by H E Mohammed Yousuf Qasim al Zarafi, Undersecretary for Administration and Finance Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who joined the session as its chief guest.

Indian Social Club Oman, and its 27 linguistic wings, Indian schools in Muscat and 16 yoga organisations, including the Art of Living, extended their full support in motivating people from all walks of life and communities to join the session.

A number of Indian enterprises contributed to making the various arrangements such as providing the yoga mats and T-shirts.

The day was also celebrated in other key cities of Oman such as Sur, Sohar and Salalah. The celebrations were the culmination of a series of yoga sessions, workshops, and seminars, which were organised in the run-up to the fourth International Day of Yoga by various yoga organisations and Indian schools in Oman in cooperation with the embassy.

With a view to providing encouragement to various yoga organisations in Oman, H E Indra Mani Pandey, India's Ambassador to Oman and other officers of the embassy participated actively in the yoga sessions.

The embassy has been celebrating the International Day of Yoga since 2015. While 3,500 persons had participated in the session held in 2016, the number increased to over 4,000 in 2017. In view of its health and spiritual benefits, yoga has become popular in Oman and is seen as a holistic system, enabling people to live healthier and happier lives.

Oman was one of the co-sponsors of the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly which had declared in December 2014, at the initiative of Prime Minister of India, June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
