UNRWA needs USD 250 mln in support for services in 2018

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, June 19 (KUNA) -- The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRW) stressed on Tuesday that it needs a USD 250-million additional support for its emergency aid and services in the second half of this year.
This came during a two-day meeting of UNRWA's consultation committee held at the Dead Sea region, the agency said in a press statement.
The meeting discussed support mechanisms for UNRWA to meet needs of the Palestinian refugees in Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, it added.
The agency has witnessed exceptional difficulties this year, UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krahenbuhl was quoted by the statement as saying.
He added that they could ensure requirements of the 2017-2018 academic year and other vital services.
He delivered a message to the next conference to be hosted by New York on June 25 on needs of the Palestinian refugees.
The agency expressed its gratitude to partners and donors as well as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE for their commitment to providing the lion's share of this year's additional support.
UNRWA has been offering its aid to about 4.5 million Palestinian refugees living in Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. (end) ab.hm
