(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Safadi said that there is no military solution to the Syrian crisis and that it is necessary to reach a political solution to stop the bloodshed and prevent further destruction in Syria.

He added that there is a Jordanian-American-Russian commitment to maintain the de-escalation zone in south-west of Syria, noting that no one would benefit from the violence if it exploded in the region. He also said agreeing upon the de-escalation zone constitute a step towards a comprehensive political solution in accordance with 2254 resolution that preserves Syria's unity and cohesion.

Responding to a question, Safadi said that Jordan is in contact with the United States and Russia and all parties agreed to maintain the de-escalation zone agreement. He added that Jordan monitors developments in southern Syria and is able to protect its interests and national security.

"The conflict will only be resolved politically and hence we see that the de-escalation zone is a necessity and an important step towards a political solution," the minister noted.

"Jordan and the European Union share views on the Syrian crisis and the need for a political solution in accordance with Security Council resolutions to be the governing framework for negotiations and the EU is interested in supporting de-escalation zones," Mogherini added.

Mogherini expressed appreciation for Jordan's role in hosting Syrian refugees and stressed the need to continue providing the necessary support to meet their needs.

Safadi and Mogherini also discussed cooperation in combating extremism and terrorism.

Mogherini lauded Jordan's important role in fighting extremism and instilling a culture of moderation and respect for others.

"We appreciate the Jordanian position and approach regarding efforts to combat extremism and terrorism," she said.

At the press conference, Safadi commended Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz's call for a conference that brought together the leaders of the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait in Mecca today to discuss supporting the Kingdom, hailing the historic and deep-rooted relations between Jordan and Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries.
