Oman- Continuing Nursing Education programme organised at Abeer Hospital

In keeping with this view, the hospital organised a conference on Patient Safety for the nurses in Muscat as part of the Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) programme. This is the first-of-its-kind programme conducted for the nurses in the private healthcare sector of Oman.

The conference was a day-long event, inaugurated by Dr Mahmood Nasar al Rahibi, senior consultant, emergency medicine, and education supervisor cum faculty, Oman Medical Specialty Board. The other dignitaries who attended the event were Dr Zainab al Balushi, head of Infection Prevention and Control - Directorate General of Health Services, Muscat, Jamsheer Hamza, director, Abeer Medical Group (Oman), Dr Sukumaran Vengail, medical director, Abeer Hospital, Ruwi, and Bindhu Varghese, chief nursing officer, Abeer Hospital, Ruwi.

Various sessions were taken to address patient safety effectively from the time patients step in till they leave the hospital. Sessions varied from how a patient could be identified and the impact of wrongly identifying a patient to the best practices in patient safety. Dr Zainab addressed the gathering with the topics 'Hospital Acquired Infection', 'Importance of Hand Washing and Hand Hygiene' and 'Biomedical Waste Management'.

'Healthcare errors affect one in every ten patients around the world. The World Health Organization calls patient safety an endemic concern,' said Dr Vengail while enumerating on the topic 'Correct Site, Correct Procedure and Correct Patient Surgery'.
