Oman- Mekunu brings more than four years of rain to Salalah


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Tropical Cyclone Mekunu brought more than four years of rain in five days in Salalah, throwing normal life out of gear. The city received a record 617mm of rainfall from May 23 to 27, and was distantly followed by Taqah with 275mm and Rakhyout 221mm of rain.

The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources stated that the governorates of Dhofar and Al Wusta witnessed heavy to moderate rains as a result of Tropical Cyclone Mekunu from May 23-27.

Rainfall measurement stations of the ministry recorded the highest rainfall in Salalah (617mm), which averages 130mm of rainfall annually, while the amount of rainfall in Taqah was 275mm, 221mm in Mirbat, 214mm in Rakhyout, 196mm in Thumrait, 180mm in Sadah, and 80mm in Al Mazyona. In the central governorate, the wilayat of Al Jaser received 15mm of rainfall.

In addition, light rains were recorded in both the governorates of Dakhliyah and Dhahirah, North Sharqiyah and Buraimi. The ministry stated, that in the wake of the cyclone, it had taken all the necessary measures to integrate with the national system response team represented by the National Committee for Civil Defence (NCCD).

A follow-up command room was opened in the ministry's General Office building and communication lines were open throughout with the directorates in the governorates of Dhofar, Al Wusta and the other governorates that were expected to be affected by the tropical storm. Prior to that, it was ascertained that the protection dams and other dams, particularly those in Dhofar were ready for the adverse weather.
