Tunisian Pres. suspends Carthage Document due to differences

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TUNIS, May 28 (KUNA) -- Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi on Monday announced the suspension of the Carthage Document indefinitely to determine the government's priorities.
The move was taken due to continued differences among signatories to the document on a profound change in the government.
President Caid Essebsi has decided to suspend the work of the Carthage Document because of the impossibility of reaching a unified position among its signatories on the fate of Yusuf Al-Shahid's government, presidential spokesperson Saida Garrach said in a press briefing.
Meanwhile, Tunisia's Islamist Ennahda Party chief Rached Ghannouchi said the movement sees that conducting a big change in the government including Al-Shahid have big risks on Tunisia and harm its supreme interests.
Secretary-General of the General Union of Tunisian Workers Noureddine Taboubi considered that the different positions concerning the new prime minister was the reason for suspending the document.
The Tunisian leader submitted in 2016 a political initiative to boost a consensus that led to the signing of the document, which constituted an action program of the government.
Last March, signatories to the document formed an experts' committee to draw up the Carthage Document II, which determines new economic and social priorities. Up to 63 points regarding social, economic and political programs for the next period have been approved.
The signatories to the document have different positions on a profound cabinet reshuffle, involving Al-Shahid, or a partial amendment. (end) khs.mmj.hm
